About PontoonHQ
Independent. Data-driven. Built by pontoon owners, for pontoon owners.
Why we built this
When you search for pontoon boat advice online, you get three things: dealer websites trying to sell you something, forums full of contradictory opinions, and review sites that rank boats based on whoever paid the highest affiliate commission.
None of that answers the actual questions buyers have: Is 90 HP enough for a 22-foot boat with a family of six? Is Starcraft actually better built than Sun Tracker, or is that just dealer talk? What prop pitch do I need for river use at 4,000 feet elevation?
PontoonHQ exists to answer those questions with data, not opinion — and to build tools that give you a direct answer instead of sending you down another forum rabbit hole.
How we score brands
Our brand scores are built from five sources:
- Owner surveys and forum analysis — we aggregate real complaints and praise from pontoon-specific forums, not Amazon reviews.
- Independent magazine test data — Cruising World, Boating Magazine, and Practical Sailor publish structured tests we reference and verify.
- Resale value tracking — what a boat is worth at 3 and 5 years tells you more about actual build quality than any spec sheet.
- Structural inspection criteria — tube gauge, weld type, fastener materials, deck construction method. These are the things that separate a 10-year boat from a 3-year boat.
- Dealer network and warranty reality — a warranty is only as good as the dealers who honor it.
Scores are updated annually. When a brand materially improves or declines, we adjust. We don't accept manufacturer data as truth.
Our affiliate model
PontoonHQ earns commission when you click an affiliate link and make a purchase — primarily through Amazon Associates, West Marine, and iBoats. This is how we keep the site free and the tools free.
Our affiliate relationships do not change our rankings or recommendations. If the Mantus anchor weren't genuinely the best option, we wouldn't recommend it — regardless of commission rate. We have passed over higher-commission products many times when a lower-commission product performed better in real-world use.
Read our full affiliate disclosure for complete transparency on how we earn revenue.
