Before you start

The most common mistake is skipping substrate preparation. Old adhesive must be fully removed before new vinyl goes down -- shortcuts cause delamination within one season.

Step 1 -- Measure and order material

Measure deck area in square feet and add 10 percent for waste. Marine vinyl comes in 6-foot-wide rolls. Plan cuts to minimize seams in high-traffic areas. Seawall and Nautique are the most owner-recommended brands.

Step 2 -- Remove all deck hardware

Remove all cup holders, cleats, and through-deck hardware before starting. This lets you properly seal all penetrations during reinstallation -- a step most owners skip that causes water intrusion.

Step 3 -- Remove old vinyl and adhesive

Use a heat gun to soften old vinyl and pull in 2-foot sections. Scrape all adhesive residue with a plastic scraper. Use adhesive remover on stubborn spots. Substrate must be clean, smooth, and fully dry.

Step 4 -- Inspect and repair substrate

Stomp the full deck and probe with a screwdriver to find soft spots. Water-damaged plywood requires replacement before new vinyl. Skipping this means soft spots return within 1-2 seasons.

Step 5 -- Install new vinyl

Apply marine-grade contact cement to both substrate and vinyl back. Allow both surfaces to become tacky before joining. Work from one end toward the other pressing firmly with a rubber roller. Allow 24 hours before walking on the surface.

Frequently asked questions

What vinyl is best for pontoon deck flooring?

Marine-grade vinyl with UV-stabilized backing rated for 5-plus years of sun exposure. 30-mil or greater thickness. Seawall and Nautique are the most widely owner-recommended brands.

Can I install vinyl over existing vinyl?

Not recommended. Installing over existing vinyl traps moisture between layers and hides substrate damage. Always remove to bare substrate and inspect before installing new vinyl.
