Editorial Policy
How we research, test, score, and update our content — and what we won't do.
Our core commitments
- We never accept payment to alter brand scores or editorial rankings.
- We disclose all affiliate relationships on every page where they appear.
- We correct errors publicly and promptly when notified.
- We update scores and guides annually — or immediately when significant new information emerges.
- We cite our sources. If we can't link to it, we don't publish it as fact.
How brand scores are calculated
Brand scores are composite ratings across five dimensions: build quality, performance, value for money, warranty and dealer support, and ride quality. Each dimension is scored 1–10 and weighted equally in the overall score.
Sources include: owner forums (aggregated over 12 months), independent magazine tests (Boating Magazine, Cruising World, Practical Sailor), resale data from Boat Trader and NADA Guides, structural inspection criteria from marine surveyors, and direct conversations with owners at boat shows and online communities.
We do not use manufacturer-provided data as a primary source. All manufacturer claims are verified against independent sources before being referenced.
How gear reviews are written
Gear reviews are based on owner feedback aggregated from boating forums, Amazon reviews (filtered for verified purchases), and comparison testing data from independent publications. Where possible, we note real-world failure modes — not just specifications.
We do not receive free products in exchange for reviews. If we did, we would disclose it prominently.
How our calculators work
Our propping chart and underpower calculator use published marine engineering formulas for HP-to-hull-area ratios, altitude derating, and prop pitch estimation. Formulas are derived from outboard manufacturer documentation, ABYC standards, and independent propeller engineers' published guidelines.
These tools provide starting-point recommendations, not final answers. We encourage users to verify results with their engine manufacturer and a qualified marine mechanic.
Corrections policy
If you find an error in our content, email hello@pontoonhq.com. We review corrections within 48 hours. If an error is confirmed, we correct it in the article and note the correction at the bottom of the relevant page.
Independence statement
PontoonHQ's editorial team operates independently of our commercial team. Brand scores and gear rankings are not shared with our advertising or affiliate contacts before publication. No brand or dealer has the ability to review, alter, or veto content before it is published.
